Skin Care in Your 30’s By now you may notice fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes. Some light individuals with light skin may even notice some hyperpigmentation or brown spots. Your cell turnover process has lessened resulting in some loss of collagen production. You absolutely must exfoliate. You will feel and notice instant results. Seek a milder scrub with fine particles. Avoid large uneven gritty scrubs. Must Do's Cleanser: In the morning, use a basic cleanser without AHA, ( alpha hydroxy acids). AHA’s cause sun sensitivity and may result in brown spots if used without sun protection. Use a cleanser with AHA’s or salicylic acid at night for best results.
Hydration: Use a moisturizer with antioxidants like alpha lipoic acid, c-ester, dmae, b3, and more to protect your skin from free radicals. Look for a plant based hyaluronic acid gel for maximum hydration. Use a natural sunscreen or be sure to use a mineral powder with sunscreen.
Eye Treatments: Start wearing an eye cream daily. For dark circles, use one with a peptide lightener or other botanicals that brighten like licorice. For extra hydration, use one with a plant based hyaluronic acid gel.
Night time treatment: Use a retinol night cream now! Retinol or other retinoids are a must do in your 30’s start preventing and rebuilding collagen now. Do not wait until you are in your 40’s-50’s Use a clinical strength retinol, and look for airless containers to maximize antioxidant benefits and preservation of retinol.
Skin Care In Your 40s... Sun damage from your youth may begin to show up in spots. Your collagen production and suppleness is also being reduced in addition to hydration. Overall your skin does not have the glow it once did. In your 40’s Must Do’s. Cleanser: Use a gentle cleanser in the morning without AHA’s ( alpha hydroxyl acids) due to sun sensitivity. The last thing you want is brown spots from the sun when you are trying to clean up your skin’s appearance. At night, try using a gentle AHA or salicylic acid cleanser.
Moisturizer: Daytime hydrator should contain antioxidants like alpha lipoic acid, 1% DMAE, C-Ester, or other new peptides to strengthen collagen. Look for richer oils like borage, and hyaluronic acid. Always use a sunscreen, natural is preferred or a mineral base powder with SPF.
Eye Treatment. Use an Eye Treatment with peptides and hyaluronic acid, dark circle lightening peptides if needed.
Nighttime treatment: Try a retinol cream first with at least 1.4--5%. Use nightly for 2-3 months. If necessary seek out a prescription retinoid. Retinol will reduce brown spots, increase exfoliation and collagen production. Look for retinol in airless containers. If you buy retinol in a jar, you can expect it last a month.
Skin Care in Your 50’s Plus Keep up your skin care routine. Cell turnover is very slow. You may feel more dryness. Expression lines are prevalent from squinting, frowning, smiling and pores are larger. You may have age spots or even precancerous spots from sun damage. Menopause and hormones cause a host of skin related issues. Consult a holistic doctor or naturalpath to help you regulate hormones. You may notice more dryness, acne, and rosacea.
50’s Must Do’s Cleanser: Do not use soap or sulphates! Wash morning and night with gentle or creamy or oil based cleanser.
Moisturizer: Use a hydrator with antioxidants like alpha lipic acid, c-ester, or dmae, and others. Also include power peptides twice a day. Use a sunscreen in your make up or apply over day hydrator. Mineral make up is great – look for natural sunscreens.
Nighttime treatment: You may continue high quality retinol creams, if you feel you need more, try a prescription retinoid. Retinol and retinoids act as an exfoliant, so you don't need anything else. Diet Must Do's Avoid Sugar at all Costs. Take a high quality Omega-3 Take a high quality herbal based fiber formula
Hormones: Seek a naturopath or doctor to evaluate your homones, estrogen as they can affect skin at all life stages.
Exercise: Find time each day to do something - get moving :)
